Statement of Solidarity: SGM SIG stands AGAINST Anti-Asian Hate Crimes
Statement of Solidarity: SGM SIG stands AGAINST Anti-Asian Hate Crimes
Dear Sexual and Gender Minority (SGM) SIG members,
We are writing today to express our strongest support and solidarity for our Asian, Asian-American, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) members and siblings. As you may be aware, there has been a dramatic increase in anti-AAPI violence since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the attacks which occurred in California during the recent Lunar New Year. We firmly stand against this increasing hatred and violence directed towards AAPI people. We want our AAPI members to know that you are not alone. We are here for you.
These violent displays of racism remind us of the importance of working actively to combat racism and hate and the importance of amplifying the voices of BIPOC members of our community. As SIG leaders, we are committed to integrating an anti-racist stance into everything we do in an effort to create a more diverse and more inclusive SGM SIG.
We are inspired by the collaboration our SIG student representative Cindy Chang has developed with the Oppression & Resilience SIG to address this issue within the ABCT community. Please click here to find a statement Cindy shared with her graduate training program which Cindy gave us permission to share with you, in case it is a helpful resource for reaching out within your own departments. Please also click here for a joint statement on “Condemning Violence Against Asian and Asian American Americans” from the Asian American Psychological Association and Stop the Hate. This statement includes a list of resources for speaking up against anti-AAPI violence which we found helpful.
As we work towards next steps to best support AAPI people and to continue the work of our SIG’s Anti-Racist Taskforce more broadly, we are open to feedback on how to improve. We welcome all SIG members to be part of the conversation by reaching out to us directly, or sharing your thoughts and resources via the listserv.
In solidarity,
Jeffrey M. Cohen & Ilana Seager van Dyk, ABCT SGM SIG Co-Chairs
